December Printing Technique: Soft Cut Block Printing

We are at the end of another year and this will be my last entry for my 2025 printing journey. I have thoroughly enjoyed trying out different techniques, am proud of myself for not giving up and thankful to those who have followed along. I have been able to connect with more crafters and printmakers, and now have many ideas to carry me into the new year. But for now, here is December’s printing technique.

Soft cut block printing is a relief printing technique where images or patterns are carved into soft rubber blocks, the remaining raised surfaces are inked, and then the block is pressed onto paper or fabric to transfer the design. Similar to woodblock and linoleum printing (but easier to carve so great for beginners), it can be used to create single image designs or repeated patterns.

Instead of a Christmas design I have been focusing this month on preparing for Fasnacht (carnival), which in our area of Switzerland has its main celebrations in January and February. There are 8 carnival clubs in Siebnen, most with a recognisable costume and mask, which I have attempted to capture in soft cut block printing form. I made the decision to keep the design simple by printing in black with a single colour pop.
