September Printing Technique: Monoprinting with Watercolour

Autumn is coming and some of the leaves have started to turn colour and fall so I thought I would use this month to try out monoprinting with watercolour using botanicals. Using a heavy weight, fine grain watercolour paper soak it with water and start dropping pools of watercolour paint on it. The more colour the better so make sure the paper is saturated, although be aware of too much mixing as it may result in murky colours. Whilst still wet, arrange the leaves on the paper and weigh them down with a stone to ensure there is contact between the botanical and paper. Leave the image to fully dry (usually overnight) and then gently remove the stones and leaves. It is as simple as that. With the mix of colours and the way a ghostly image of the botanics is created, it makes for some really interesting compositions that are completely unique. Have a go, and have fun.
