April Printing Techniques: Woodblock Printing
Carved wooden blocks loaded with ink can be used to create single image designs or repeated patterns. This is a relief printing method, where non-printing areas are carved out, leaving a raised surface which when inked will produce a reverse image print.
I had the joy of participating in an introductory course with Anja Vanal (maasa.ch) bringing life back into some old tea towels, vests and socks, as well as trying out some card printing. Using screen printing ink I was showed the method of how to line up the blocks, using corner markers, to create a repeat pattern print. A key point I took away was to not overload the block with ink and to apply it with a sponge to get an even coverage.
Since then I have been trying wooden block printing at home using old wooden printing press letters to create unique gift bags and socks with hidden messages on the soles. Instead of screen printing ink I have used Lino print fabric ink from Speedball which does not require heat to set. I think it works nicely and has so far held up well with washing.
