Printing on Slate

Recently we had a fantastic holiday in North Wales, UK and visited the National Slate Museum. It is a very interesting museum about slate mining and the social history of slate mining in Wales. There I picked up a few small slate pieces from the shop and have decided to try botanical printing with them.

First attempt the impression didn’t print well, but being a porous rock I could easily wash off the paint and start again. Second attempt the print smudged a bit, but third time lucky I got a good image. We would like to use the slate rounds as coasters and so I needed to seal them in a varnish to protect against water. I applied a varnish with a brush but discovered that also smudged the image. If I print on the large slab then I think I will seal it with a spray varnish so not to disturb the print.
